Multi-Step Flows

Multi-Step Flows

Ask visitors to take action or subscribe step-by-step to increase conversions.

Multi-Step Flows is an OptiMonk campaign feature that divides a campaign into a sequence of pages — each presented one at a time — rather than showing everything in a single popup. The most effective and widely used multi-step structure starts with a low-friction first step: a single YES/NO question, a preference choice, or a simple survey question that requires minimal effort to answer. After the visitor responds to the first page, they are advanced to the second page where the actual ask — the email address, the opt-in, the form — is presented. This sequencing works because of a well-established psychological principle: a visitor who has already made one small commitment (clicking YES, choosing a preference, answering a question) is significantly more likely to follow through with a second, larger commitment (submitting their email) than a visitor who sees the email field as their first interaction. Multi-Step Flows are available for all OptiMonk campaign types — popups, fullscreens, side messages, embedded content — and are built in the same editor by adding pages to a campaign.

Key benefits

  • Higher opt-in rates through the commitment and consistency principle. Asking for an email address is a cold ask — the visitor has invested nothing and has no reason to comply. Asking a simple preference question first changes the dynamic: the visitor makes a small, low-effort commitment, enters a positive or engaged mental state, and then encounters the email field in a context where they have already chosen to participate. Research and practice consistently show that this sequencing produces higher form completion rates than single-page popups with the same offer.
  • Collect preference and segmentation data alongside the email at zero extra cost. The first step of a multi-step flow is not merely a psychological trick — it is a genuine data collection opportunity. The visitor's answer to "What are you most interested in?" or "What describes your skin type?" or "Are you shopping for yourself or as a gift?" is valuable first-party data that enriches the subscriber record, enables personalized email flows, and — via OptiMonk's Dynamic Shopify Customer Tags integration — automatically segments the subscriber in Shopify the moment they opt in. You get a higher-quality lead and more data than a single-step email capture produces.
  • Versatile structure for any campaign goal. Multi-Step Flows are not limited to email capture. The same step-by-step structure can be used for quiz-style product recommendation campaigns (answers narrow to a specific product), post-purchase feedback collection (satisfaction rating on step one, open comment on step two), cart abandonment recovery (confirm the products are still wanted on step one, offer a discount on step two), and more. Any campaign that benefits from building engagement incrementally rather than asking for everything at once gains from multi-step structure.

How it works

Step 1
Add a second page to your campaign in the editor

In the OptiMonk campaign editor, click the Add Page button to add a new page to your campaign. Each page functions as a separate screen within the same popup sequence — with its own layout, elements, and content. You can add as many pages as your flow requires, though two or three is most common.

Step 2
Design the first page for maximum ease and engagement

The first page should ask for the smallest possible commitment — a YES/NO button pair, a preference selection with two or three visual choices, or a single survey question. No email field should appear on this page. When you configure the buttons on the first page, set their action to "Go to page 2" so that clicking either option advances the visitor to the next step rather than submitting the form. Add the email input field and subscribe button only on the second page.

Step 3
Connect pages with button actions and publish

Verify that all button actions on each page are correctly linked — first-page buttons advance to page 2, second-page submit buttons complete the campaign and trigger the integration. If you are using Dynamic Shopify Customer Tags or ESP field mapping, map the survey answer field from page 1 to the appropriate property in the integration settings. Publish the campaign — when a visitor reaches the trigger, they will progress through the pages in sequence, with each step building toward the final opt-in.

Frequently asked questions

What is Multi-Step Flows in OptiMonk?+

Multi-Step Flows is an OptiMonk campaign feature that breaks a campaign into a sequence of pages presented one at a time. The most common structure asks a low-commitment question (a YES/NO or preference choice) on the first page to build engagement, then presents the email opt-in form on the second page. This sequencing consistently produces higher conversion rates than single-page email capture forms by leveraging the psychological principle that small initial commitments increase follow-through on subsequent asks.

Why does a YES/NO first step increase opt-in rates?+

The effectiveness of a YES/NO first step comes from commitment and consistency — a well-documented behavioral principle. When a visitor clicks YES to a question like "Would you like 10% off your first order?", they have made an explicit micro-commitment. People tend to act consistently with their stated intentions, so the visitor who just said YES is substantially more likely to provide their email address on the next page than a visitor who was shown the email field with no prior engagement. The YES/NO format also replaces a passive form with an active choice, which increases the sense of agency and participation.

Can I use multi-step flows for campaigns other than email capture?+

Yes. Multi-Step Flows are available for any campaign goal. Common non-email-capture uses include: quiz-style product finders where each page narrows to a recommendation based on the visitor's answers; post-purchase feedback where the first step collects a satisfaction rating and the second collects an open comment; preference surveys where answers are used to personalize subsequent email flows via Shopify Customer Tags; and multi-step discount reveals where a teaser on step one drives interest before the code is shown on step two.

How many pages can a multi-step campaign have?+

OptiMonk does not impose a hard limit on the number of pages per campaign, but best practice is two to three pages for most use cases. Each additional page adds a drop-off point where visitors may close the campaign before completing it. The goal is to find the minimum number of steps that collects the data you need and maintains the visitor's momentum — typically a one-question engagement step followed by a single opt-in form, with an optional confirmation or thank-you page at the end.

Can I map the answer from the first step to Shopify or my ESP?+

Yes. OptiMonk's field mapping in the integration settings allows you to connect any form field from any page in the campaign to a property in your connected ESP or CRM. For Shopify stores specifically, survey answers from the first step can be mapped to Shopify Customer Tags via the Dynamic Shopify Customer Tags feature, automatically tagging the new subscriber with their stated preference at the moment they opt in — enabling immediate segmentation in Shopify without any manual data work.
