Reuse Targeting Rules
Create your own custom targeting rules and re-use them easily in future campaigns.
Reuse Targeting Rules is an OptiMonk feature — built on the Saved Segments system — that lets you save any set of campaign targeting conditions as a named custom segment and apply it to future campaigns in a single click. Instead of rebuilding the same targeting logic from scratch each time you create a campaign that shares an audience definition with an existing one, you save the configuration once and load it whenever you need it. Saved Segments are stored in the Segments tab under the Audience section of your account, where they can be viewed, edited, renamed, or deleted at any time. Beyond custom Saved Segments, OptiMonk also supports loading targeting rules directly from any previous campaign via the "Copy from Previous Campaign" option — useful for reusing a past configuration that was never formally saved as a segment. All three segment options — Predefined Segments, Saved Segments, and Copy from Previous Campaign — are accessible from the same "Load segment" interface within any campaign's targeting settings.
Key benefits
- Eliminate repetitive targeting setup across campaigns. If you regularly run campaigns targeting the same audience — for example, returning visitors from Germany with a cart above $50 — rebuilding that set of conditions manually for each new campaign is time-consuming and prone to inconsistency. Saved Segments solve this: configure the audience once, save it with a descriptive name, and load it into any future campaign in seconds. The same precise targeting is applied every time, with no risk of variation from manual re-entry.
- Maintain a library of refined audience definitions. Over time, as you optimize your targeting through A/B testing and performance analysis, you develop audience definitions that work. Saved Segments give these refined configurations a permanent home — accessible from every campaign you create going forward, not just the one they were originally built for. Your targeting knowledge compounds: each segment you refine and save becomes a reusable asset for your entire campaign library.
- Copy from any previous campaign even without a saved segment. If you have not yet built the habit of saving segments but want to reuse the targeting from a campaign you ran six months ago, the "Copy from Previous Campaign" option lets you do exactly that — browse your campaign history, select the one whose targeting you want, and load it instantly. No saved segment required; every campaign you have ever created is available as a targeting source.
How it works
Open a campaign whose targeting conditions you want to reuse. Click Edit settings, navigate to "Select who should see the popup," and click "Save as a segment." Give the segment a descriptive name — including the audience type and any key conditions is helpful for identification later — and click Save. The segment is now stored in your Segments library and available in every future campaign.
In any campaign's targeting settings, click "Load segment" to open the segment selector. Switch to the Saved Segments tab to see all your custom-saved audiences. Select the one you want to apply and click Next. The campaign's targeting rules are instantly updated to match the saved segment. Review the conditions and proceed.
Navigate to Audience → Segments tab to see all your saved custom segments listed together. Click the three-dot menu next to any segment to edit, rename, or delete it. Editing a segment updates its definition in the library — but does not automatically update campaigns that already use it, since the segment's rules are copied into each campaign at the time of loading rather than linked dynamically.
Frequently asked questions
What is Reuse Targeting Rules in OptiMonk?+
Reuse Targeting Rules is the ability to save a set of targeting conditions from one campaign as a named Saved Segment and load it into any future campaign in a single click. It eliminates the need to manually rebuild the same audience definition across multiple campaigns. Saved Segments are stored in the Audience section of your OptiMonk account and can be edited, renamed, or deleted at any time. A "Copy from Previous Campaign" option is also available for loading targeting rules from any past campaign without a saved segment.
What is the difference between a Saved Segment and Predefined Segments?+
Predefined Segments are OptiMonk's built-in, ready-to-use audience definitions — such as New Visitors, Non-Subscribers, Active Shoppers, or Returning Visitors — that are automatically suggested for each campaign based on the selected template. They represent common best-practice audiences and require no setup. Saved Segments are custom audience definitions you create yourself by saving the specific combination of targeting conditions you have configured for a campaign. Predefined Segments are available to all users by default; Saved Segments are personal to your account and reflect your specific targeting logic.
If I edit a Saved Segment, does it update the campaigns that already use it?+
No. When you load a Saved Segment into a campaign, OptiMonk copies the segment's targeting rules into that campaign's settings at that moment. After loading, the campaign's targeting is independent of the segment — editing the segment later does not retroactively update campaigns that previously loaded it. If you want campaigns to reflect an updated segment definition, you need to re-load the segment into each relevant campaign after editing it.
Can I copy targeting rules from a campaign even if I never saved them as a segment?+
Yes. The "Copy from Previous Campaign" option in the Load segment interface lets you browse all campaigns you have previously created and load the targeting rules from any of them into your current campaign. This works for any campaign in your account history, regardless of whether its targeting was ever saved as a named segment.
What happens if I copy a Shopify segment into a non-Shopify campaign?+
Shopify-specific targeting rules — such as product page targeting by product attributes, collection page targeting by collection name, or Dynamic Customer Tag conditions — are only available on Shopify and Shoprenter stores. If you copy a Saved Segment from a Shopify campaign into a campaign running on a non-Shopify domain, those Shopify-specific conditions will not be applied. Only the platform-compatible conditions will transfer. OptiMonk will notify you when this occurs so you can review the resulting targeting configuration before saving.
