Segments

Define and re-use any custom segments or select any from our pre-defined list.

Segments in OptiMonk is the targeting management system that lets you define, save, apply, and reuse sets of campaign targeting rules — making audience configuration faster, more consistent, and more accessible regardless of your experience level with the platform. Every campaign in OptiMonk has a targeting configuration that defines who sees it — the combination of conditions such as visitor type, page URL, cart contents, country, traffic source, and more. Segments give you three ways to set up this configuration without building it from scratch every time: Predefined Segments (OptiMonk's built-in, use-case-specific audience recommendations that are automatically suggested based on the campaign template you select), Saved Segments (your own custom-named targeting rule sets that you can save once and load into any future campaign), and Copy from Previous Campaign (which loads the exact targeting configuration of any campaign you have previously built, without requiring it to have been formally saved as a segment). All three options are accessible from the same "Load segment" interface within any campaign's targeting settings. Saved Segments are managed centrally in the Segments tab under the Audience section of your account.

Key benefits

  • Predefined Segments give beginners a best-practice starting point instantly. If you are new to OptiMonk or setting up a campaign type for the first time, knowing which combination of targeting conditions to use for a specific goal is not obvious. Predefined Segments solve this: when you select a campaign template, OptiMonk automatically recommends the audience definition most appropriate for that template's goal — whether that is New Visitors, Non-Subscribers, Active Shoppers, Returning Visitors, or Just Purchased Visitors. Click to apply it and the targeting is already configured correctly, ready to refine or accept as-is.
  • Saved Segments eliminate repetitive setup for experienced users. For marketers who run multiple campaigns to the same audience — a specific Klaviyo segment, a cart-value-based high-intent group, a returning non-subscriber from a particular traffic source — Segments turns any targeting configuration into a reusable named resource. Configure once, save, and load into any future campaign in seconds. Your targeting knowledge compounds over time rather than being rebuilt from scratch each time.
  • A central library makes all your audience definitions manageable at scale. As your campaign library grows, so does the complexity of keeping targeting consistent across dozens of campaigns. The Segments tab in the Audience section provides a single view of all your saved custom segments — where each can be viewed, edited, renamed, or deleted without opening individual campaigns. This central management layer makes it practical to maintain audience quality across a large and active campaign set.

How it works

Step 1
Access the Segments system from any campaign's targeting settings

In any campaign, click Edit settings and navigate to the "Select who should see the popup" section. Click "Load segment" to open the segment selector. Here you will see all three options: Predefined Segments (OptiMonk's built-in recommendations), Saved Segments (your custom-created audience definitions), and Copy from Previous Campaign (targeting rules borrowed from any past campaign).

Step 2
Select and apply the segment that fits your campaign

Under Predefined Segments, browse OptiMonk's recommended audiences for common campaign goals and click any to preview its targeting rules. Under Saved Segments, select any custom segment you have previously saved. Under Copy from Previous Campaign, browse your campaign history and select the one whose targeting you want to replicate. Click Next to review the rules, then Next again to apply them to the current campaign.

Step 3
Manage your segment library from the Audience section

Navigate to Audience → Segments tab to view all your custom Saved Segments. Use the three-dot menu next to any segment to edit its targeting rules, rename it, or delete it. Edits to a Saved Segment update its definition in the library but do not retroactively update campaigns that have already loaded it — those campaigns' targeting remains as it was at the time of loading.

Frequently asked questions

What are Segments in OptiMonk?+

Segments in OptiMonk is the targeting management system that allows you to set up campaign audience definitions using one of three methods: Predefined Segments (built-in audience recommendations based on the campaign template), Saved Segments (custom targeting rule sets you create and name for reuse), and Copy from Previous Campaign (targeting rules loaded directly from any existing campaign). All three options are accessible from the "Load segment" interface in any campaign's targeting settings, and Saved Segments are managed centrally in the Audience section.

What are Predefined Segments and which ones are available?+

Predefined Segments are OptiMonk's built-in audience definitions for common campaign use cases — automatically recommended based on the template you select when creating a campaign. Available segments include New Visitors (first-time arrivals), Non-Subscribers (visitors who have not yet opted in), Active Shoppers (visitors with products in their cart), Returning Visitors (visitors who have been to the site before), and Just Purchased Visitors, among others. The available Predefined Segments may differ slightly between Shopify and non-Shopify stores. They are designed to give any user a correctly configured targeting starting point without needing to build conditions manually.

What is the difference between a Saved Segment and Copy from Previous Campaign?+

Both allow you to reuse targeting rules from existing configurations, but they work differently. A Saved Segment is a deliberately named targeting configuration that you explicitly save for future reuse — it lives permanently in your Segments library and can be loaded at any time. Copy from Previous Campaign loads the targeting rules from any campaign you have previously created, even if those rules were never saved as a segment. It is a shortcut for reusing a past configuration without the overhead of a formal save step — useful when you remember that a specific past campaign had the right targeting, even if you never formally preserved it.

Can I edit a Predefined Segment after applying it to a campaign?+

Yes. When you load a Predefined Segment into a campaign, its targeting rules are copied into the campaign's settings. From that point, the campaign's targeting is fully independent — you can add, remove, or modify any condition without affecting the Predefined Segment definition or any other campaign. The Predefined Segment acts as a starting point that you can refine for your specific use case.

What happens if I copy a segment from a Shopify campaign to a non-Shopify campaign?+

Shopify-specific targeting rules — such as product page targeting by product attributes, collection page targeting by collection name, or Shopify-specific cart rules — are only available on Shopify and Shoprenter stores. If you load a Saved Segment or copy targeting from a Shopify campaign into a campaign running on a non-Shopify domain, those Shopify-specific conditions will not be transferred. Only platform-compatible conditions will be applied, and OptiMonk will alert you so you can review the resulting configuration before saving.
